Same plants as well as animals have different names in different countries as well as within the country. Eg. apple in english, seb in hindi is the name of same fruit in different languages. This creates problem because if we speak the common hindi name of parrot in Tamilnadu they will not understand what we are talking about. These difficilties urged biologists to name plants and animals according to binomial nomenclature.
In binomial nomenclature there is a generic name and a specific name. First letter of generic name is written in capital while specific name is wtitten in small. Generic and specific name should be seperately underlined if handwritten and italicized when typed. All the name should be in Latin.
It is sufficient to use common names of plants and animals when we are talking about a group of people talking in the same language in which the names are used. But when people from different countries, continents come together then it becomes a problem when a specific language known only to some are used to name different species. So for facing this problem we have internationally accepted rules for naming the plants and animals in a common language – Latin. The names are same in every country and continent and hence it becomes easy to identify a particular species among people of different places.
Different animals and plants have different local names. These local or regional names may not be known by people from other geographical region. This can cause confusion when dealing with the organism on a global level so for better understanding and to avoid confusion scientific names are used. Also scientific names give us a rough idea about the structure and characteristics of the organism that we get from the species and the genus name.
Common name varies from one place to other place. For example, in India, dog is called by using different common names in different languages. Like Kutha in Hindi, Kukka in Telugu, Naayi in Kannada, Patti in Malayalam.
If a person in India writes a research article on dog by using its common name, how can a person reading it in England can understand. If we use a scientific name all over the world, like dog’s scientific name is Canis lupus, anyone can understand.
because there is many common names to the plants in different country. some cases the plant species has many common names in the different regions of the same country. Whereas there is one scientific name for each plant or animal. for example it can called wheat, grist, flour , Kamh etc…
Beacause there is very much confusen in the common names
Since common names of plants and animals may vary place to place ,it will induce confusions.
It is to make the study of classification of plants and organisms easy. For example, when indian students will study classification, they will use ‘aaloo’ for potato, in germany it will be studied as’kartoffel’, in france as ‘patate’ and so on. And then think of a situation when there will be a scientific research on any plant or organism, scientists of different countries will come together for research and they will be using common names of plants and organisms in their own languages. How the research gonna proceed??? Hence, the scientific names are used to describe various species of organisms in a way that is universal so that scientists around the globe can readily identify the same organism.
Because it will not be universal thus will be difficult to share information from one scientist to another . Common names differ in each society
because common names dont define organism’s properties.
