They are extremely minute, fibrous and tubular structures which form the structural frame-work inside the cell. They are found ONLY in eukaryotic cells. They were discovered, for the first time, by the fluorescence microscopy. They maintain the shape of the cell and its extensions, regulate orientation and distribution of cell organelles, intracellular transport and movement of cells. They are generally of three types:
a. Microfilaments
b. Intermediate filaments
c. Microtubules.
