Cholesterol is an amphipathic molecule like phospholipids, it contains a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic portion. Its hydroxyl (OH) group aligns with the phosphate heads of the phospholipids. The remaining portion of it tucks into the fatty acid portion of the membrane.
